Jonathan Haws, professor and chair of the Department of Anthropology and co-director of Portuguese Studies, has earned an award from the National Science Foundation. The award is for a 3-year archaeological excavation to study the spread of modern humans across Europe and the extinction of Neanderthals.

Passport Health Plan has announced a 10th cycle of funding for the research and demonstration projects initiative entitled Improved Health Outcomes Program (iHOP). The iHOP Cycle X program is seeking proposals from groups and individuals for initiatives that improve quality, access, efficiency, and cost of health care for Medicaid recipients and uninsured individuals in Kentucky. Letters of Intent must be received by August 1.

Minimally invasive option to treat severe aortic stenosis in new patient population
The U of L Cardiothoracic Surgery/ Cardiology Dept is seeking patients over age 18 diagnosed with severe aortic stenosis. Patients with low surgical mortality risk may be eligible to participate in a randomized study comparing a minimally invasive transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) device option to open-heart surgery. TAVR procedure is generally performed “awake” using minimal sedation and requires no sternal incision. (IRB #16.0249) Principal Investigators are Kendra Grubb, MD and Michael Flaherty, MD.
