    1.) Commonwealth Credit Union’s Belknap Campus branch is now open

    Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m., 2126 S Floyd Street (near ULPD and University Parking offices)

    Stop by our preferred credit union partner’s new branch in the Floyd Street parking garage to learn more about membership benefits and enter for a chance to win a $50 Visa gift card (drawing to be held on Aug. 19). The branch has a 24/7 ATM and a coin machine, plus free cappuccino and popcorn daily. Plans are underway for a weeklong grand opening celebration in late August, but the branch is now fully functional and the Commonwealth CU team looks forward to meeting you.

    2.) Alumnus of the Year announced

    The UofL Alumni Association’s Wilson Wyatt Alumni Award recognizes graduates who have distinguished themselves in their fields and are exemplary UofL ambassadors. The Alumni Association would like to announce the 2016 Alumnus of the Year, Ernest E. Allen, 68A, 72L. Allen received a degree in International Studies followed by his Juris Doctorate. He is a global expert on the digital economy; public-private partnerships, child protection, modern slavery, and he founded the International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children. The Alumni Awards event is on Oct. 20.

    3.) Funding Opportunity: UofL-NSF I-Corps Site

    Do customers need your innovation? Let the UofL-NSF I-Corps Site program help with the discovery and commercialization of STEM innovations. Inventors and researchers partner with entrepreneurial mentors to develop a strategy to get innovative products to market. Awards are up to $2,500 per team. The program is open to all UofL faculty, staff, students, and alumni. Applications are due by Aug. 11.

    6.) Faculty/staff discussion leaders needed for Welcome Week

    August 19, 10 a.m.- 1 p.m.

    Discussion leaders and student co-leads will engage students in small-group conversation about UofL’s Book-in-Common, “Hidden America.” Leaders receive a comprehensive, event-specific facilitation guide and copy of the book. Time commitment consists of training (optional, 10-10:30 a.m.); leader check in and overview (10:30-11:15 a.m.) and small group formation/discussion (11:15 a.m.-1 p.m.).

    7.) Health Sciences Center Poverty Simulation planned

    July 27, 9:30 a.m. to noon, Room 101/102, Kosair Charities Clinical & Translational Research Building, Health Sciences Campus; Free

    The simulation is an experiential tool used to educate health care professionals about the day-to-day realities, struggles, and stresses faced by low-income populations. Participants will gain an increased awareness of the financial barriers to patient compliance in low income populations, and identify opportunities for increased connections and coordination with other community agencies to lessen obstacles for patients.

    8.) OB-GYN Grand Rounds

    July 22, 1-2 p.m., Ambulatory Care Building-Basement Auditorium

    Please join us for Ob/Gyn Grand Rounds July 22. We will have guest speakers from the University of Kentucky Department of Anesthesiology and Obstetrics. The topic is “Amniotic Fluid Embolism, Perspectives from an Obstetrician and Anesthesiologist.” They will discuss the typical presentation of AFE and decreasing morbidity and mortality in AFE. Also, discuss ACLS management of the parturient when cardiovascular collapse accompanies AFE.

    9.) Family Medicine Grand Rounds

    July 22, 7:30- 8:30 a.m., Jewish Hospital Bottigheimer Auditorium; Free

    Stephen J. Winters, MD, UofL Professor of Medicine, and Chief, Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes, will present, “Testosterone and Cardiovascular Disease.” CME category 1 is available for both AAFP and ACCME accreditation.

    10.) Pediatric Grand Rounds

    July 22, 8 a.m., Norton Hospital, 2nd Floor Auditorium

    This Friday, please join us for a pediatric grand rounds featuring Gil Liu, MD, Ted Smith, PhD, and Ben Reno-Weber, MPA, MBA. Liu is an associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics at UofL. Smith is chief of Civic Innovation and executive director at the Institute for Healthy Air, Water and Soil in Louisville and Reno-Weber is the project director of the Greater Louisville Project. They will present, “Improving the Culture of Health in Louisville.”
