    Of UofL’s nearly 2,800 incoming freshmen, 13.5 percent are African American and 4.1 percent are Hispanic/Latino. Jenny Sawyer, executive director of admissions, believes this is a new record for racial diversity at the university.

    1.) UofL School of Medicine hosting LGBTQ Health Summit

    Sept. 12, 8:30 a.m. -4 p.m., UofL School of Medicine

    Keynote Speaker: Jennifer Potter, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine, Advisory Dean & Director of the Castle Society at Harvard Medical School, Director of Women’s Health Research at the Fenway Institute. There are multiple opportunities for medical educators and community clinicians. Dr. Potter will facilitate the first three sessions. CME Credit Offered, RSVP required for lunch. Sponsored by the Undergraduate Medical Education Office, Office for Community Engagement and Diversity, and the LGBT Center.

    2.) MLK Scholar Program to welcome students  

    August 19, 9-10 a.m., Chao Auditorium, Ekstrom Library

    The campus community is invited to join the University of Louisville Martin Luther King Scholar Program as we celebrate the 4th incoming class of King Scholars. This mentored scholar program includes a scholarship, which is awarded annually to 10 African American or Latino high school graduates. The MLK Scholar Program is designed to develop critical thinking skills, engage in self exploration, and establish an appreciation for civic engagement.

    3.) Only one month left to nominate a nurse

    To recognize the life-changing work of nurses, the School of Nursing is hosting the third annual Florence Nightingale Awards in Nursing. We invite you to nominate a nurse by submitting an essay of no more than 200 words explaining how a registered nurse – employed anywhere in KY or Southern IN – has impacted, improved, elevated, and/or inspired others. Nominations must be received by Sept. 8. Winners will receive a cash award and commemorative plaque during the awards dinner on Nov. 3.

    4.) City Café offering free food samples Friday

    Aug. 19, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Belknap Campus

    City Café is celebrating the opening of its new facility in the Duthie Center on Belknap Campus Friday morning. The restaurant will offer free samples of its food and half-price coffee to patrons Friday morning from 9 a.m.to 11 a.m.
