Physical Plant preparing for winter break
The Department of Physical Plant is preparing for winter break, Dec. 23 through Jan. 2. In continuing our ongoing efforts to conserve energy, we will take measures to reduce the heat a few degrees in most academic buildings on all our campuses. We also encourage everyone to do your part by turning all lights off and making sure all electrical appliances such as coffee makers, small heaters, unused computers and power strips are unplugged prior to leaving for the break. We ask everyone to assist us by closing and locking all windows and outside doors prior to leaving for the break and during the break if you are back on campus. Although Physical Plant offices will be closed, emergency staff will either be available or on call if needed during the entire holiday period. Anyone requiring PPD assistance during this time should contact Public Safety at 852-6111. Physical Plant employees will conduct periodic checks of all buildings; the frequency will be determined by weather conditions.

The Thursday, Dec. 21 UofL Today email will be the last UofL Today email delivered before holiday break. Any campus announcements received after noon on Wednesday, Dec. 20, will not appear in UofL Today until Tuesday, Jan. 2.

Partnership for a Green City Energy Tip 15 – Heating and Energy Efficiency in Winter
Heating and cooling work and school buildings can be expensive, but indoor temperatures must be comfortable so people can concentrate on work or teaching and students can concentrate on learning. Thermostat settings of 68 degrees for heating and 78 degrees for cooling are recommended and people should dress appropriately, keeping a sweater, sweatshirt or hoodie available to wear if needed to warm up. For every -1 degree change on the thermostat, you can save 514 kWh each year.
