UofL students and graduates have earned 88 Fulbright awards since 2003—more than all other Kentucky colleges combined.

Helton is a Louisville native who graduated this month with a degree in elementary education from the College of Education and Human Development.

“As a new educator who sees a dire need for improvement in the quality of education in the United States, I am honored and excited to learn from one of the best education systems in the world,” Helton said of her year-long scholarship to teach elementary schoolchildren in South Korea.

A 2011 graduate of duPont Manual High School, Helton attended UofL as a Woodford R. Porter Scholar and is the daughter of Tara Hines Kristiansen and Stanley Kristiansen, both of Louisville.

The university had previously announced its Fulbright and other prominent 2015 scholars May 5.
